4-H Garden Plant Problems

OVERVIEW

In this game, the child must help Dr. Norm and his friend, the Bee, determine what is wrong with the plants in the garden. They then must explore possible solutions, observing the effects each solution will have on the garden. Ultimately the child can choose a solution and print a report of their overall experience. The software incorporates vivid graphics, animation, sound effects, and interactivity to engage children (of all ages) as they perform scientific discovery.

Two versions of the software were created. One version is hosted on a series of computer-based kiosks that are located in the 4-H Children's Garden at Michigan State University. The kiosks contain digital cameras, microphones, and wireless connections to the Internet to enhance the experience. The other version is a CD-ROM designed to run on standard desktop computers. The CD-ROM is available commercially for sale.

FUNDING

  • The 4-H Children's Garden CD-ROM was partially funded by a grant from the Michigan 4-H Foundation.

ROLE

I served as the sole programmer on the project working with Susanna Tellschow, the art director. The design of the software was a collaboration of Carrie Heeter, Norm Lownds (4-H Garden Curator), Susanna Tellschow, and myself.
